Healy To Join Board

Test Great Nominated

Monday 22 July 2019

Australia’s Test wicket-keeper of the century Ian Healy has been nominated to join the Board of Queensland Cricket.

The Board’s Nominations Committee has recommended that Mr Healy be appointed to fill the casual vacancy left by the resignation of former QC Board Chairman Judge Sal Vasta last month.

Mr Healy will attend the next two QC Board meetings as a Director and then seek the role on a permanent basis at the Annual General Meeting on 17 September. If successful, he would then serve the remaining two years of Judge Vasta’s original term.

Mr Healy is current patron of Northern Districts Cricket Club and a past President of the Australian Cricketers’ Association. He was the founding Chairman of the Bulls Masters and remains involved with the organisation.

One of Queensland’s finest home-grown products, Mr Healy was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2008, as well as being named as the wicket-keeper in Cricket Australia’s Team of the 20th Century.

He played 119 Tests for Australia, and at the time of his retirement, held the world record for the most Test dismissals (395) by a wicketkeeper, a record he held until being surpassed by Mark Boucher (SA) and then fellow Australian Adam Gilchrist.

He also claimed 234 dismissals in one-day cricket. He amassed 4356 Test runs, including four centuries, with his highest score of 161 coming against the West Indies at his beloved Gabba in 1996.

As captain of the Queensland Bulls, he set and enforced high standards for players and fittingly was involved during the State’s string of success that started with the breakthrough win by Queensland in the 1994-95 Sheffield Shield win.

The trophy that is awarded to the best Queensland player each year is named in his honour while his Premier grade club Norths plays out of Ian Healy Oval at Kalinga.

He was made a Life Member of Queensland Cricket at the 2014-15 AGM.

Chairman Chris Simpson welcomed the addition of Mr Healy to the Board.

“As a player I was fortunate to have enjoyed the benefit of Ian’s experience and guidance and acknowledge that as being of enormous assistance to me,’’ he said.

“He is a devoted Queenslander who has been successful in his post-playing career in business and broadcasting. I know Ian as a passionate advocate of the game at all levels and I look forward to his input and insights as a fellow director.’’
